Bush Tomato has a very distinctive flavour. Pick the fruits when they are orange and juicy and cook in sauces as a substitute for regular tomatoes. One bush will produce an abundance of fruit.
Bush tomato is a member of the solanum family, or potato family and has large blue flowers. The fruit must not be eaten until ripe. The leaves are shaped like a kangaroo foot, hence they are also known as kangaroo apple. Grows extremely quickly and should fruit in the first year.
DESCRIPTION: This is an attractive evergreen shrub 1.5m high by 2m wide. It has very distinctive lush foliage in the shape of a kangaroo paw. It is a quick growing shrub with attractive large purple flowers in summer and autumn. The fruits are green, then yellow followed by orange tomatoes. Pick the fruit only when they are ripe - orange.
GROWING CONDITIONS: Grows in a variety of soils and conditions but prefers well drained soils with part shade. Will tolerate frosts to -8C and extended dry spells.
FOR BEST RESULTS: This plant will respond to water over the summer period and will produce an abundance of fruit.
